Choosing Your Hydroponic Gardening Supplies

by Nelda Rich

The way you choose your hydroponic gardening supplies will depend on which plants you will be growing and which system you are using. An Ebb and Flow system floods the roots of your plants with nutrient rich solution at times that are set and it drains the excess solution after the set interval to let oxygen get through to the roots. A Hydro Drip system drips the nutrient solution onto the root of the plant and the excess can be reused later.

Another technique is the nutrient film. This system allows a slow film of nutrients and fertilizer to move and run down channeled routes to get to the plant's roots. You can also reuse the unused solution later. Another system is the aeroponic kind and this is most commonly used in greenhouses. The way it works, is fine mist like nutrients rain onto all the plants.

The least expensive system is the Wick. This one does not require a pump, it uses a wick from a candle of a thicker lantern type wick to move the nutrients from the growing medium to the roots of the plant. The downside to this system is that it can make the plants too wet for healthy growth. These five different types of systems use similar supplies so you will always be able to find what you are after.

Equipment you might need will include; hydro lighting and cooling systems, odor control, air cleaners, fans, huts, pumps. They are not expensive although they may seem that way if you are a beginner and are unfamiliar with growing plants without the use of soil; you will be surprised that it can be done.

Hydroponics suit mostly places that are small like apartments or classrooms. The plants are advantaged because they won't be likely to become diseased or be harmed in any way by pest if they are indoors. The benefits for yourself is there isn't any pulling out of weeds, working in soil or digging.

Gardening with hydro is an option that is attractive and when you have the correct tools, you will have a garden that flourishes. Other advantages, are that plants grown in this way grow quicker and let you be a gardener all year around.

To find out the best system for you, choose what you want to grow first and then you will be able to decide what supplies you need. E. G., ebb and flow or drip systems are the right choices for growing, tomatoes, peppers or cucumbers. Talk to the consultants at your local supply store if you are not too sure which system will suit you and your needs or research by yourself before choosing the right equipment to buy.
