Wort Kettles and Carboys

by Anthony Johnson

If you are a professional brewer, you will need to purchase the correct kettle size which you can decide by calculating the batch size. The brewer must know the amount of liquid that is to be boiled and must have extra space in order to prevent the brew from boiling over. Evaporation and absorption make it necessary to have a slightly bigger kettle size than the batch size. For brewing a 15 gallon batch, you could consider buying the 60 gallon wort kettle.

Many industrial brewers purchase the 60 gallon wort kettle for restaurants and so on. These are made in aluminum or stainless steel and the 60 gallon wort kettle has all in-built features like spigots and built-in thermometers as it is made especially for brewing purposes. The spigots are an important feature which helps you to transfer the wort into the primary fermentor easily.

You need to maintain the 60 gallon wort kettle regularly and it also requires a steam supply. The brewing is excellent in this kettle and hence it is used by many large brewing concerns. You can buy a used one from the internet or even a new one if you wish. You can even try out the electric models in the 60 gallon wort kettle, but remember that this might consume a huge amount of electricity.

Carboys are used for the process of fermentation in the case of wine, beer and mead. The container has a stopper with a lock which prevents bacterial or oxygen from entering the container and thus fermentation takes place in the brew. Initially, they use a primary carboy and in the second stage a secondary carboy is used. It is now a big question among many that can 5 gallon water containers can be used as carboys.

There are people who claim that such water containers are a good replacement for carboys and you can purchase these online at quite a low rate. They may not serve you for a very long time but these water containers definitely prevent bacteria from attacking the liquid, and therefore, if you are questioning can 5 gallon water containers be used as carboys, the answer would surely be in the affirmative.
