How The Costume From The Captain America Movie Differs From The Comic Version

by David Lawson

Captain America: The First Avenger is a box office smash hit and it seems that everyone wants to join the adventure of America's favorite comic book hero. One of the best ways to get in on the action is to have your own Captain America movie costume. Of course, it's essential that you know the key differences between the classic graphic novel costume and the costume worn in the blockbuster movie.

The Shield

The most recognizable component of the outfit has always been the red, white, and blue shield. While later versions of the comic book use the same type of round shield that is seen in the movie, the original shield was a rounded diamond shape. For the film version a large disk shield is appropriate.

The Head Piece

Another major difference which is vital to take into consideration between the two versions is that of the headpiece. The version most often seen in the graphic novels is a full head covering cowl which extends down the back of the neck. In the film a more simplified version is depicted. This version is made of a military battle helmet covered in leather which extends down the top half of the face to form a mask. The movie version also does not have the iconic leather wings attached to the sides of the headpiece; rather they are painted onto the helmet.

The Boots

The boots see massive change between the two versions. The comic book version generally has bright red spandex boots with flap-over tops, while the film version has tall brown leather military boots which come three quarters the way up the calf. The look of the boots is also represented in the captain's gloves; again, Brown military style leather for the movie version, red spandex with cuffs for the comic book version.

The Pants

The pants are probably the most important consideration to keep in mind when choosing between the two versions of the uniform. For a man who's confident in his physique, and masculinity, the comic book version involves the wearing of bright blue leotard pants. For those who want to go with a slightly more macho appearance the movie version is probably best; in this version blue-gray military battle pants are used.

The Top

The appearance of the top of the uniform is so much different between the two character versions. In the graphic novels however, the top is made of form fitting spandex with muscle shaped armor worn beneath. In the film, the top is merely a decorated military uniform top which contains standard body armor.

Accessorizing

One of the single most important considerations that has to be kept in mind between the two costumes is the wide range of weaponry that Captain America has used over the years. It is vital to keep in mind that while the graphic novelist version used everything from swords, to spears, to slingshots, he never used a firearm. In the film however captain America is seen wearing a leather holster on his thigh and carrying a side arm.

It makes no difference if you're a fan of the original comic book character for have become enthralled with the blockbuster summer movie, having your very own Captain America movie costume lets you join the action at your next party or gathering. Whether you're planning to buy or make your own custom keeping these key differences between the two versions in mind will help you to present a more accurate depiction. For more than 60 years Captain America has been a beloved character, now you can join the fight for right with your own costume.
