Diving Basics - Important Information You Ought to be Aware of

by Darius Matheson

If you have always wanted to see what the underwater world is like, you might have considered the idea of getting scuba diving lessons. Not only do you get the chance to see the teeming underwater world of exotic flora and fauna, it's also the opportunity to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

"Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus" is what "scuba" stands for. In the Second World War, navy divers used these equipment to be able to launch attacks on enemy ships underwater. At present, scuba is commonly used to mean the sport of scuba diving and the equipment and other gear used to carry it out.

What vital information do you need to hold before you can actually dive? First of all, you need to go into it wholeheartedly with full knowledge of the risks involved. You need to genuinely love and respect the underwater world and those that dwell in it before you can take up scuba diving lessons. The perils of the deep are not only limited to the imaginations of movie directors- they are only all too real and you should realize that beforehand.

And the best way to prepare yourself to scuba is to get trained for it. You don't need to get certified for it right away, especially if you want to see if scuba is for you. There are resort courses that will let you experience what it is like to breathe underwater by training you in a pool setting and later taking you to dive in shallow waters.

Once you find that scuba is something you'd really like to engage in, you can get certified by taking classes from such organizations as the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) or Scuba Schools International (SSI). Once you get your open water certification, you can also undergo more training so you can specialize in Deep Diving, Night Diving or Stress and Rescue. You can even take that one step further to get your Dive Master Certification or your Instructor Certification if teaching is what you'd like to do.

What types of gear do you need to go scuba diving? There are many and once you start buying your own, they can burn a hole in your wallet. You start with having masks, snorkels, fins and booties. Exposure suits, weights or belts and knives, lights, whistles, retractors and other accessories are also needed. Don't forget the most important equipment of all- buoyancy compensators (BC), regulators and tanks (cylinders).

When you are still beginning, there is no need to buy your personal gear at the outset. Most of these can be rented in your dive shop although once you get serious about scuba diving, it is highly-recommended that you purchase your own.

The cost of scuba diving lessons can range from $300 to 400 while you have to shell out anywhere from $550 to over $1,000 depending on the brand and quality, for all the scuba gear you need. It's an expensive hobby but for those who know the beauty of life underwater, the cost hardly matters.

By the way, if you're interested in Grenada diving, you should definitely check out Dive Grenada. They are an awesome shop. Read this info about Grenada dive sites for more details.
