Dog Training: 5 Different Techniques

by Dirk Gruenberg

As with most things in life, when it comes to dog training there are many different ways to go about it. And, of course, it will be helpful for you to know about these different methods and techniques so that you can decide which one you think will work the best for you and your dog. Here are a few:

You can reinforce your dog positively for doing things well. This, for example, would mean giving him a treat when obeys a command immediately and when he behaves himself well.

Negative reinforcement: Reinforcement always means that you try to get your dog to do more of what he just did. This can be done by reinforcing the behavior positively or negatively. Positively means that you give him something that he wants, and negatively means that you take something away that he hates.

Another common dog training technique is simply punishing bad behavior. This is the exact opposite of above mention since this is done by disciplining your dog when he or she misbehaves. This technique discourages dogs to behave badly to avoid being hurt or punished.

Another option is called extinction: What this essentially means is that you take something away from the dog that he likes. For example, this could be attention. Instead of paying attention to him, you simply ignore him after he displayed poor behavior.

Hand signals are another technique you could use to teach your dog. Simply come up with different hand motions that you can use to signal certain commands.

Of course, it is up to you which techniques you want to use, but let me say that I have had the greatest success with the reinforcements. And whatever you choose to do, here are a few more tips: Start the dog training early, the earlier the better, really.

Also be conscious of the fact that your dog's attention span, especially with puppies, is rather limited - this is pretty much guaranteed. Keep the training sessions short and be patient.

When you really want to succeed in training your dog, it is very important that you surely know what you are doing. If you think you still need more things to learn, you can always get a dog training guide or ask advice from dog training experts.
