House Training Your Dog

by Dirk Gruenberg

You are going to bring a new puppy home soon? Then one of the things you really should give some thought to is house training, because this is something you will need to teach him.

You need to train your puppy to stop relieving himself on your carpet. You should find a way to teach your puppy to hold it until it is time to go out for a walk.

Of course, there are innumerable ways to house train your puppy. And if you go about it the right way, it should not be too difficult either. Mostly, what you need is patience. Punishing your dog will not speed up the process.

As you get to know your new puppy better, you will find that he give you certain warning signs, before he really needs to relief himself. Pay attention to those and let your puppy spend as much time in the yard outside as possible.

Taking your puppy outside very often where he can do his business will help your efforts to house train him. Definitely make sure to take him outside when after he wakes up, after meals, and after you played with him.

Another important idea is to get a crate for him that he will really like. He can sleep in it, and he will make every effort to keep the crate clean - that's just something dogs know to do intuitively.

Another option would be buying a litter box. Your dog could relief himself here at night, rather than you having to take him outside, which can really be quite frustrating.

Again, your dog will try and keep his crate clean, so he will be inclined to use the litter box for his business instead. If getting up at night is not for you, this might be a good solution.

You should carry the puppy outside early in the morning. Every time your puppy successfully relieves outdoors, you should give him a treat or some other kind of reward. House training of your puppy is a gradual process. After a successful training, you will see positive results.
