Making an Inexpensive Scrapbook Out of Plastic Bags

by Autumn Lockwood

Although there is certainly a time and a place for very high quality scrapbooks, sometimes you just want a speedy and cheap way to make a durable little scrapbook. Your kids will really enjoy making these straightforward scrapbooks out of plastic bags. These books can even make a wonderful present for other relatives who want to see some photographs of your family. Kids can even learn a great deal about saving photos through this activity. You can even grab some pictures from picture frames all around your home to place in your scrapbook. Make a few of these simple little books today, and let the picture fun begin.

Materials You Will Need

In order to create a scrapbook from plastic bags, you'll need to get a container of gallon plastic bags that zip shut. Be sure to find plain bags, rather than ones with printing on the front. Also, measure and cut out two square pieces of light cardboard, 12 inches by 12 inches. Gather together some scrapbook paper, or maybe some affordable craft paper instead, specifically if your kids will be participating in this activity. You will also need a ruler, glue stick, scissors, a stapler, hole punch, yarn needle, assorted markers, and a big nail and hammer. Plus, obviously you will want a nice array of photos. Use printed off digital photos for kids, instead of using the original prints of film photos. If you are creating a book for a relation, you may want to choose photos that are good enough to display in scrapbook picture frames. Youngsters are often satisfied with any kind of photos though.

Putting Together the Book

When you are producing the scrapbook for a kid's project, you will most likely want to construct it yourself. Decide how many pages you want, and select that exact same number of plastic bags. Connect them by stapling 5 bags together along the left edge, with the zip lock opening along the top edge. If you want more than 5 pages, create more page sections. Place one of the cardboard cover pieces on a cushioned work surface, with a stack of plastic bags on top. Utilizing the nail and hammer, pound holes through the cover and plastic bag stack, each roughly an inch apart. Do the same thing with the rest of the sections of plastic bags, and the other cover. Place the bag sections between the covers, line them up, and stitch together using a needle and yarn, knotting the ends when done. Using the ruler as a guide, score a line along the front and back bound edges, so that you will be able to fold them back. This will allow the book to fold open easily.

Incorporating the Photos

When the book is put together, the fun can begin. Get a bunch of construction paper and some pictures that will fit the bags correctly and then give them to your child. They can then use round-tipped scissors, glue or adhesive squares and coloring implements to make unique pages. When their pages are complete, simply slide them into the bag pages and zip closed. You might want to take a little more time and care if you plan on giving the book as a gift. These scrapbooks are great because the bag pages are so easy to open and to close that it makes it nice and easy to swap photos back and forth between your book and picture frames.

These books are a great way to exhibit your favorite pictures, and they will make a great activity for your kids or gift for friends and relatives
